The Norwegian Language Test (Norskprøven)

Below you will find information about the official Norwegian language certification exams. Please note that these exams are conducted only in Norway.
The Norwegian Language Test (Norskprøven) is divided into four parts:
Reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, and oral examination (speaking).
The reading, listening, and written tests are taken on a computer (PC) and are usually held on the same day, while the oral test is scheduled on a different day.
For both the written and oral tests, you must choose the language level at which you wish to take the exam.
- The reading test evaluates how well you understand written texts in Norwegian.
- The listening test assesses how well you comprehend spoken Norwegian (when others are speaking).
- The written test evaluates your ability to write original texts on various topics in Norwegian. You must choose your language level when registering. You cannot receive a higher result than the level you registered for.
- The oral test assesses how well you speak Norwegian. It consists of a conversation part and an individual part. You must choose your level at the time of registration. The exam is conducted together with another candidate (another person taking the test).
Most test centers in Norway offer the Norwegian language exam four times a year.
You decide how many of the four parts you want to take. You can take all four, or just one, two, or three. You can also retake one or more parts later if you want to improve your results.
The test measures your language level
There is no fixed syllabus for the Norwegian exam. This means you don’t need to read specific books or know specific facts. All candidates at the same level of Norwegian should have the same opportunity to perform well, regardless of whether they have attended a language course or not.
The exam evaluates your ability to use Norwegian in everyday life, education, and work. It does not test factual knowledge.
You must demonstrate that you can use the language to understand what you hear and read, and to express yourself both orally and in writing.
In this exam, A1 is the lowest level and B2 is the highest.
Assessment by examiner (sensor)
In the written and oral tests, your performance is assessed by trained examiners (sensors) who determine your result. These are experienced teachers of Norwegian as a second language for adults.
In the written test, your text is sent digitally to at least two different examiners.
During the oral test, the examiner is present in the same room and listens to your performance. There will also be an examiner (eksaminator), who is a staff member at the test center and asks you the questions.
Both the examiner and the eksaminator have received special training to ensure proper assessment procedures.
For the listening and reading parts, there is no individual examiner — the answers are assessed automatically by the computer system.
All results are sent out at the same time
The results for all test parts are released simultaneously. You will receive your results a few weeks after the exam.
You have the right to appeal the result of the written test. If you do, the result may be lower, the same, or higher. You cannot appeal again once you have received the final decision from the appeals process.
