What is Språkkafé all about?

These are language practice clubs—a different and enjoyable way for someone not only to learn a language, but also to meet new people. They are aimed at individuals who want to improve their Norwegian by discussing specific topics with others and practicing the language skills they have already acquired.
These clubs differ from traditional language instruction, as the focus is on conversation and the ability to express oneself on various subjects. They are mainly organized by libraries, the Red Cross, volunteer centers, organizations, and parishes throughout Norway.
There are different types of such clubs, but they all share some key common elements: a suitable space, volunteers, and participants.
Language practice clubs can take place in a variety of settings, such as: libraries, volunteer centers, community spaces, churches, cultural centers, and educational institutions.
A club based on language games, for example, can take place either in a library or even in a local café. What matters most is that the environment suits the atmosphere and needs of the participants. The profile of the participants is always taken into account—are they individuals or families with children? This is crucial for proper scheduling of the club so that it can be held at times convenient for everyone.
Volunteers
Volunteers are the backbone of these clubs. They act as coordinators in the discussion groups and help keep the flow and interest going. Of course, it is possible to have paid coordinators, but experience shows that this requires more resources and is harder to sustain long-term. Using volunteers proves to be more sustainable and effective.
Volunteers usually come with enthusiasm and a willingness to contribute, but it’s important that they receive guidance regarding: choosing discussion topics, potential pitfalls, and their role within the club. A volunteer is not a teacher, a civil servant, or a counselor—they are a conversation partner. The relationship is equal and human.
Frivillig.no – Volunteer Platform
Frivillig.no is a national platform that connects volunteers with organizations. Organizations can post announcements for volunteer activities, while individuals can find opportunities based on location, interests, and availability.
It is supported by bodies such as Frivillighet Norge, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Health, and municipalities and institutions across Norway. When volunteers come from organizations like the Red Cross, they have already gone through interviews and training, ensuring the quality of their participation.
Participants
Participants come from various backgrounds, but they share a common goal: 👉 to improve their language skills through practice.
